H0 Locomotive Classes – Overview

The most important locomotive classes for H0 model railroading at a glance: 25 classes with over 3,300 models — from the Reichsbahn standard-class steam locos of the 1920s to today's modern multi-system heavy-haul engines. The class overview helps with targeted layout planning and comparing locomotive families.

Every class has its own technical features, liveries and operating areas. The following groups organise the main H0 classes by propulsion and use case:

The Main H0 Locomotive Classes at a Glance

A class (German: Baureihe, BR) is the official German classification for a locomotive family of shared design. For model railroaders the class is a key selection criterion: collectors often have favourite classes, and prototypical layouts need the classes matching the era and operator. This overview lists the 25 most prominent H0 classes with their features and all available models.

Steam Locomotives

The classic steam locomotive classes of the Deutsche Reichsbahn and Bundesbahn — from the elegant BR 01 Pacific to the globally most numerous steam loco BR 52. Focus on eras II to IV.

  • BR 01 — DRG/DB express steam locomotive
  • BR 03 — Pacific steam loco for light routes
  • BR 41 — Heavy universal steam locomotive
  • BR 44 — Heavy three-cylinder freight steam loco
  • BR 50 — Universal freight standard-class loco
  • BR 52 — Reichsbahn war locomotive

DB Standard-Class Electric Locomotives

The core electric locomotives of the Deutsche Bundesbahn of the first standard-class generation: express, push-pull, three-phase pioneer, freight and regional. Defining engines of eras III to V.

  • BR 110 — DB express standard-class E10
  • BR 111 — DB push-pull electric locomotive
  • BR 120 — DB three-phase pioneer
  • BR 140 — DB freight E-loco E40
  • BR 141 — DB regional E-loco E41

DB Express and Heavy-Haul Locomotives

Specialists of DB AG: the TEE queen BR 103, the heavy-haul BR 151, the Siemens EuroSprinter BR 152 and the DB AG universal express engine BR 101.

  • BR 101 — DB AG express engine for IC/EC
  • BR 103 — DB TEE express locomotive
  • BR 151 — DB heavy-haul electric locomotive
  • BR 152 — Siemens EuroSprinter ES 64 F

Multi-System Heavy-Haul Locomotives (Era V/VI)

The modern European universal engines: Siemens Vectron (BR 193), Taurus (BR 182), Bombardier TRAXX family (BR 185, 186, 187) and the EuroSprinter four-system (BR 189). Cross-border services across Europe.

  • BR 182 — DB Taurus (ES 64 U2)
  • BR 185 — Bombardier TRAXX 2
  • BR 186 — TRAXX MS multi-system
  • BR 187 — TRAXX 3 with Last Mile diesel
  • BR 189 — Siemens ES 64 F4 four-system
  • BR 193 — Siemens Vectron

Diesel Locomotives

The defining diesel locomotives of DB and DR: V100 family (BR 212), V160 family (BR 216, 218) and the Russian-built Ludmilla (BR 232) of the Deutsche Reichsbahn.

  • BR 212 — DB V100 universal diesel
  • BR 216 — DB V160 mainline diesel
  • BR 218 — DB V160 universal diesel
  • BR 232 — DR Ludmilla

Which Class Is Right for Me?

The choice of class depends on era, prototype operator and use case. Some pointers:

  • Classic steam layout: BR 01, 03, 41, 44, 50, 52 for DRG/DB/DR of eras II–IV
  • DB standard era IV: BR 110, 111, 140, 141, 218 in Ozeanblau-Beige or Orientrot
  • East German layout era V: BR 232 (Ludmilla) and BR 52.80 (rebuild)
  • Modern DB AG (era VI): BR 101, 152, 185, 186, 187, 193 in Verkehrsrot
  • Private / leasing: BR 185, 186, 187, 189, 193 in MRCE, ELL, Railpool liveries
