CSX Transportation was formed in 1980 through the merger of Chessie System with Seaboard Coast Line. The letters CSX themselves officially stand for nothing — the X is intended to represent the multiplication of the two predecessor systems. CSX today is the largest Class-1 railroad east of the Mississippi with 21,000 route miles in 23 states and Ontario. Core traffic: coal from Appalachia, intermodal between Atlantic ports and the Midwest, and merchandise freight. In H0 scale, Athearn dominates the CSX range.
The current standard livery "YN3" (Yellow Nose 3) since 2008 shows dark blue locos with a yellow nose and white lettering. Earlier schemes were "YN1" (1986–1992, "Stealth" black with yellow nose tip) and "YN2" (1992–2008, dark blue/grey/yellow). Collectors particularly seek the heritage units painted in the schemes of predecessors B&O, C&O, L&N, Conrail and SCL.
