H0 Models from Portugal

Portugal shares the Iberian broad gauge of 1668 mm with Spain — a technical peculiarity that makes Portuguese CP models unmistakable. Characteristic are the Alfa Pendular on Lisbon–Porto, the Sorefame coaches with their distinctive front, and the Portuguese specialist Sudexpress, producing both CP and RENFE models in premium quality.

The Portuguese railway (CP — Comboios de Portugal) operates the passenger network, while Medway (formerly CP Carga) handles freight. The Iberian broad gauge of 1668 mm separates Portugal and Spain technically from the rest of Europe — variable-gauge axles are required for direct Lisbon–Madrid–Paris services. The main network is electrified at 25 kV 50 Hz; the Lisbon-Cascais commuter line is an exception at 1500 V DC.

Portuguese railway operators

  • CP – Comboios de Portugal — the Portuguese state railway for passenger service.
  • Medway — Portuguese freight, derived from CP Carga.
  • Fertagus — the private Lisbon–Setúbal commuter railway crossing the 25 de Abril Bridge.

International manufacturers with Portugal range

  • Electrotren — Spanish manufacturer with selected CP models, especially coaches.
  • Lima — historic CP models, especially diesel multiple units and locomotives of the 1970s.
  • Märklin and Roco occasionally offer CP models, often as variants of Spanish RENFE locomotives.
