Primex

Primex was the affordable entry-level brand of Märklin GmbH, produced from the 1970s until the early 1990s. Under the Primex label Märklin released a broad H0 range in 1:87 scale aimed at beginners and budget-conscious modellers. The range covers 78 models.

Primex models are fully based on the Märklin system: alternating current (AC) with centre-stud pickup, fully compatible with every Märklin accessory and track system. The models were technically simpler than the regular Märklin line, but at the same time offered an affordable entry into the world of model railways. Many childhood memories of H0 model trains are tied to Primex sets.

Today Primex models are sought-after collector pieces from the golden era of analogue model railways. After the brand was discontinued in the early 1990s, the products were marketed again under the Märklin label. Well-preserved Primex locomotives and wagons enjoy great popularity among collectors and nostalgics.

Primex H0 models — collector guide and buying tips

Primex models are fully compatible with the Märklin system and run without modification on Märklin layouts. Because Primex uses AC with centre-stud pickup, the models are not compatible with DC two-rail systems from Roco, Fleischmann or Piko. Anyone who already owns a Märklin layout can run Primex models straight away.

Primex as a collector's piece

Well-preserved Primex models in their original box fetch clearly higher prices with collectors than used examples without box. Particularly sought after are starter sets from the 1970s and 1980s as well as rare special editions. The box condition is often just as important as the model itself.

Difference between Primex and Märklin

Primex models were technically simplified versions of the Märklin originals — with less detailing and simpler motors. In return they were significantly cheaper and ideal for everyday running. Many locomotives are still reliably operational today and can be serviced without problems, since spare parts are often compatible with regular Märklin parts.
