H0 Models from France

France produced the formative European high-speed concept with the TGV and a tradition-rich railway with the SNCF, from the Mistral era to the LGV. This overview links to all France topics: SNCF, TGV, French H0 manufacturers like Jouef and REE-Modèles, and famous locomotives of the CC and BB families.

French railways operate at 1.5 kV DC on the southern legacy network and 25 kV 50 Hz AC in the north — the two electrification systems define SNCF multi-system locomotives to this day. The TGV high-speed network (LGV) revolutionised European passenger transport from 1981 onwards and remains a benchmark for cruising speed and gauge standardisation.

French railway operators

  • SNCF — the French state railway, founded 1938 through nationalisation of the five major private railways (PLM, Nord, Est, Ouest, Midi).

French model manufacturers

  • Jouef — the long-established French H0 manufacturer, now part of the Hornby group; focused on SNCF locomotives and French coaches.
  • REE-Modèles — the French premium manufacturer for highly detailed SNCF models, from steam to CC 6500.

Famous French locomotives and trains

  • SNCF 141 R — the American Mikado, post-war reconstruction steam locomotive, dominant until end of steam traction.
  • SNCF CC 7100 — the classic six-axle electric of the 1950s, record locomotive (331 km/h, 1955).
  • SNCF BB 9200 / BB 9300 — the elegant "Capitole" locomotives for Mistral and TEE services.
  • SNCF CC 6500 — the mythical express locomotive of the 1970s, still an icon of French railways.
  • SNCF BB 22200 — the multi-system universal locomotive, the backbone of pre-TGV long-distance services in its Mistral livery.
  • TGV — the French high-speed train, from Sud-Est (1981) through Atlantique, Réseau, Duplex to Euroduplex.
  • Mistral / Capitole / Le Train Bleu — the legendary post-war SNCF luxury trains, often modelled by L.S.Models.
