Register nowAll H0-scale models of the BR 44 at a glance: the heavy freight standard-class steam locomotive of the Deutsche Reichsbahn with three-cylinder drive in 1:87 scale. With 2-10-0 wheel arrangement, five cylinders and 80 km/h top speed, it was the defining freight locomotive on steep mountain lines — in service for over four decades with DR and DB.
The BR 44 was developed from 1926 as a heavy freight standard-class locomotive of the Reichsbahn and built in over 1,700 units. Its three-cylinder drive and 2-10-0 wheel arrangement allowed it to handle the heaviest freight trains even on steep mountain lines. It remained in DR service until the early 1980s. Märklin/Trix, Roco, Brawa, Fleischmann and Liliput offer models of all variants in H0 scale.
Highly sought are the original version with Wagner deflectors (Era II), the post-war Witte-deflector variant (Era III/IV), the oil-fired versions and the DR rebuilds with new high-performance boilers. Special models like 44 1486 and the famous "Kohleklau" advertising locomotive are popular among collectors. Filter by manufacturer, era or DCC sound.
