BNSF H0 Models – The Largest US Class-1 Railroad

BNSF Railway was formed in 1995 through the merger of the Burlington Northern Railroad with the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway and is today the second-largest Class-1 railroad in North America (the largest by route mileage). Its network covers 32,500 route miles in 28 US states and three Canadian provinces. Core traffic includes coal trains from the Powder River Basin, double-stack intermodal services from the West Coast ports and transcontinental manifest freight. In H0 scale, Athearn dominates the BNSF range, supplemented by Walthers, ScaleTrains and Rapido.

BNSF Liveries – Heritage I to IV

The livery generations are clearly numbered: Heritage I (1995–96, "Cigar Band") adopted the Santa Fe scheme with BNSF lettering. Heritage II (1996–2005, "Pumpkin") introduced the orange-green livery with white lettering. Heritage III (2005–2010, "Wedge") brought the angled black/orange scheme. Heritage IV (since 2010, "Swoosh") is the current black-orange-green livery. Collectors particularly seek heritage units of predecessors AT&SF and BN in their original colours with BNSF lettering.

BNSF Locomotive Families

The fleet is dominated by EMD and GE diesels: GE ES44 (Evolution Series), AC4400CW, EMD SD70ACe, SD70MAC, SD60M and the numerous pre-merger locos GP38-2, GP40-2, SD40-2 in heritage or BNSF liveries. Filter by manufacturer, class or DCC sound.
