The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (AT&SF) was founded in 1859 and grew into one of the largest and most iconic Class-1 railroads in the United States. Its network stretched from Chicago to Los Angeles and San Francisco, with focal points in California, the Southwest and the Midwest. In 1995, AT&SF merged with Burlington Northern to form BNSF Railway. The famous passenger trains Super Chief, El Capitan and Texas Chief belong to the classics of American rail history. In H0 scale, Athearn dominates the Santa Fe range, supplemented by Walthers and Rapido.
The iconic red-silver "Warbonnet" livery was introduced in 1937 for the F-units of the Super Chief — named after the Native American war bonnet and featuring the characteristic arrowhead nose. This scheme defined Santa Fe's image for six decades and was later applied to GP60M, FP45 and Dash 8-40BW units. Other schemes included: the black-silver freight "Bookends" scheme, the blue-yellow "Bluebonnet" scheme (1972–1989) and the red-yellow late-period livery of the 1990s.
Classic F-units: F3, F7, F9 in Warbonnet. Diesels: GP35, GP60M, FP45 (streamlined diesel in Warbonnet), SD45, Dash 8-40BW, GE B40-8W. Steam 4-8-4 (3751-class) locomotives are also popular as models. Filter by manufacturer, class or DCC sound.
